Oct 13: Comoros for big DRC Party

▫️ Two boxers to represent Comoros in Africa’s premier boxing event

Comoros will be represented by two boxers in the Africa Elite Boxing Championships set for Kinshasa, DR Congo from October 14-27.

The President of the Comoros Boxing Federation Mohamed Abbou Mbechezi today announced bantamweight Ben Cheik Hassani and lightweight Radjay Mohamed (pictured) will carry the flag of the Indian Ocean island nation in Africa’s most glamorous boxing tournament to feature some of the top boxers in the continent.

This is the second time Radjay Mohamed is featuring in the Africa Championships while Ben Cheik Hassani will be taking part for the first time.

Radjay was among the four Comoros boxers who made their debut in the Africa Championships last year in Yaounde, Cameroon.

The Comoros boxer caused an upset by knocking out Morocco’s 2015 Africa Championships gold medallist and 2022 Mediterranean Games champion Mohamed Hamout in the round of 16 lightweight bout to qualify for the quarter-finals, losing to DR Congo’s Mweba Kitangila.

Despite the defeat, Radjay gave a good account of himself, and is now eyeing a semi-final place in the DRC event.

The other three Comoros boxers all lost in their first fights. Featherweight Ibrahim Saidi went down on points to Libya’s Ahmed Alkoum,welterweight Samir Barouf was beaten by Senegal’s Cheikh Diop in the round of 16 with light-middleweight Mohamed Aboubacar KO’d by the eventual gold medallist Mbiya Kulenguluka of the DRC.
